The IWA Regional Symposium will include a one-day excursion to Mesolongi-Aitoliko Lagoon and Ancient Pleurona in Aitoloakarnania on 24th March 2014.

10.00– 11.30 Archaeological Museum of Patras

Archaeological Museum of Patras

The new archaeological museum of Patras (opened in 2009), is one of the most significant in the country. It is located in the north entrance of the city, in an impressive, modern building with distinct architectural features. It houses 1300 artifacts that narrate the history of the area from prehistoric to Roman times. The exhibition comprises three thematic sections, exploring the public life, private life, and the necropolis of the ancient city of Patras.

12.30 – 14.00 Archaeological site of Plevrona

Archaeological site of Plevrona

After crossing the bridge of Rio-Antirrio, we will stop at the site of ancient Plevrona. The site is located a few km NW of Mesolongi city. The ancient city of Plevrona was mentioned by Homer as one of the Aitolian cities that participated in the Trojan War. The city was destroyed and rebuilt on its current location during the Hellenistic period (3rd century BC). It is surrounded by impressive fortifications, with 36 towers and 7 gates and includes the ancient agora and theatre, as well as a huge cistern cut out of the rock bed. In addition, the site offers a breathtaking view of the Mesolongi-Aitoliko Lagoon system and the Patraikos Gulf.

14.30 – 15.30 Tour of Mesolongi-Aitoliko lagoon

Mesolongi-Aitoliko Lagoon complex is part of a Marine Protected Area (MPA), one of the richest wetlands in Europe. It is also a Ramsar Site, an Important Bird Area (IBA) and part of the Natura 2000 network. The National Park of Mesolongi-Aitoliko Lagoon, Estuaries of Acheloos and Evinos and Echinades Islands, was established in 2006 and covers an area of 44,200 hectares.

16.30 – 17.30 Lunch in Rion-Patras and return to hotels.
